Initiated in 2011 by Sabrina Chen, the 2013 Alabama State Co-Coach for National MATHCOUNTS and Scholastic National Medalist in Poetry, eατ πie has grown into a program whose materials have helped students nationwide to prepare for MATHCOUNTS in addition to the AMC's and AIME's as of 2013.
Since its inception as an intensive summer program in mathematics, Eat Pie Institute has individually coached three consecutive Alabama State Champions for MATHCOUNTS from 2012-14 as well as the State Team Champion in 2013. In 2014, the Institute coached two qualifiers for the USAJMO, who were the only two students to qualify from Alabama out of 231 students around the nation.
Originating as a non-profit organization, Eat Pie has pursued one primary mission: to create a self-sustaining learning network, in which the community teaches the community and anybody can affect change, regardless of age. More than that, it seeks connection and building friendships.
Over its first three years, Eat Pie Institute grew from a five-student school to a mathematical community of nearly seventy students connected by this common goal. In 2013, Eat Pie sponsored its first summer internships for middle and high school students interested in teaching and mentoring, and by 2014, it had brought together a staff and problem writers from multiple cities in several states. Starting in 2015, the Institute is expanding to the humanities, hosting its first offerings in Speech and Debate as well as a novel course called Theory of Everything.
From the Eat Pie Team, we wish you all the best for the coming year. We hope you continue to wonder at the world around you. Most of all, we hope you smile all the way.
